The dust has barely settled on the 2016-17 season but football never sleeps does it. So, plans are afoot, some like this confirmed game, now falling into place, as far as Brighton’s pre-season preparations are concerned ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.

It will be here before we know it and a tester for Albion ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League season has seen a pre-season friendly against Champions League semi-finalist Atletico Madrid – beaten by rivals Real Madrid – announced.

Brighton will welcome Atletico Madrid, the third Spanish side to visit the Amex Stadium after Villarreal in 2013 and Sevilla in 2015, to the Amex for this meeting with Diego Simeone’s side on Sunday 6th August, kick off has been confirmed as 4pm.

Of course, as with any pre-season friendly, the main thing to get from this is a challenge and the continuation of fitness being built up – such a game could always be subject to change too – but if Brighton can secure a morale boosting win over the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finalists it would set us up nicely for the topflight season ahead.

But, as things stand, this pre-season friendly will form the latest phase of boss Chris Hughton’s preparations as he looks to guide Brighton to success in the Premier League next season after our Championship promotion.
