Brighton have been in an unfamiliar position this season, we had become more accustomed for promotion pushes as opposed to relegation battles but this has been what we’ve seen this season.

We’ve still got work to do to make sure that we are ‘mathematically safe’, we’re almost there though following Saturday’s win over Blackburn, but Tony Bloom is already planning for next season with our chairman telling the Argus that his minimum aims are for us to be back among the top six in the Championship.

To make this happen it’ll be a ‘busy summer’, we’ll deal with the players coming to the end of their contracts and then we’ll be looking to make quite a lot of improvements to the squad with Chris Hughton set to be backed in the transfer market.

‘We will do our very best to give ourselves a competitive squad to be in the top six, so for sure we’ll be getting in new recruits in the summer which will get us in that position.

‘It’s going to be quite a busy summer. We’ve got to get this season out of the way. There are a few players out of contract that we haven’t made decisions on so until we get to that point in early May I can’t say more than that.

‘Certainly we’ll be looking to improve the squad in quite a few different areas.’

There are some members of this squad, assuming that they want to stay, that we would certainly want to get tied down to new contracts but others, that might want to stay, that we wouldn’t! Getting these players sorted out first and foremost would be the priority.

Bloom knows that we’ve still got to make sure that we’re definitely safe, mathematically, so there’s work to be done but when we are he’s looking forwards to us enjoying what’s left of the season and enjoying our football against some of the best sides in the league.

Ideally the live games with Bournemouth and Watford, maybe even Middlesbrough too, will be games we play knowing we’re safe! Which if we are we can play with freedom and show that we’re moving in the right direction under Hughton.
