Sami Hyypia’s departure as Brighton manager wasn’t looking as though it would make much difference at the Amex Stadium on Boxing Day, but a fightback from two-goals down ended with us getting a point against Reading in the end.
With half time approaching, and us two-nil down, it wasn’t looking good for caretaker manager Nathan Jones but a goal just before the break and a last minute equaliser ensured that Brighton earned a two-two draw.
A worse possible start couldn’t really have been made, less than a minute into the game former Brighton striker Murray (1), on loan to Reading from Crystal Palace, turned the ball home from five-yards.
Murray went close again with Stockdale saving to keep out Taylor. A Brighton penalty appeal, with Holla going down under a challenge from Obita, was turned away before Murray (26) scored in typical striker fashion to extend the visitors lead.
The afternoon got worse when injury forced off Bent, which saw Mackail-Smith coming on having been recalled from his loan spell with league 1 outfit Peterborough but hope was restored shortly before the break when Forster-Caskey (40) finished off a Halford long throw in hat was flick on by Dunk to make it one-two at the break.
We gained in confidence from this and almost drew level in similar fashion to our first goal. Another Halford throw in was flicked on by Dunk once again but Colunga’s effort came back off the post.
Reading could have sealed the points if Murray had completed his hat-trick with Mackail-Smith hitting the side netting and Holla denied from distance by Reading ‘keeper Federici, who also turned a Joe Bennett effort over the bar. When Federici also denied March, who had come off the bench, you sensed it wasn’t to be our day….
In the last minute though the pressure paid when Calderon (90) scored from close range to finish off a Colunga cross and give us a two-two draw.
