A new ‘keeper wouldn’t be something I thought would be a priority for Brighton but we’ve been looking to bring in Finnish international Niki Maenpaa, to compete with David Stockdale and Christian Walton.

Richinel Bryson has told the Argus that any move could be in doubt if goalkeeping coach Antti Niemi didn’t remain at the Amex Stadium.

Niemi was brought in by Sami Hyypia but did remain under Chris Hughton following his arrival but his future has been put in doubt with Bryson saying that he expects him to move on.

‘We have a slight problem. Niki’s story has been playing for a long while with Brighton, for months now, but last year we also had a chat.

‘We had some conversations with people in-between the club and us but Antti was there then. Antti will probably leave Brighton. He is not sure whether he will remain.

‘We are not sure and this is what we are waiting on. We are keen to see what the club is going to do.’

As said I don’t think we need a new ‘keeper is a priority for us but if Hughton wants to bring in one he will, will this be Maenpaa though or is this nothing more than representative talks?

Whilst some ‘doubt’ might have been placed on this happening if countryman Niemi does exit this summer it doesn’t mean that this isn’t a move that could take place.

‘It’s not dependent on whether Antti is staying. Antti knows Niki perfectly because he was his coach in Finland and up to now he would be his coach at Brighton.

‘But we don’t know what the future is going to bring, so this is something we have to anticipate.’

The 30-year-old, who was first linked with us last summer, isn’t only being touted as one that could join us as he had ‘other options’ in England and Holland.
