Brighton’s promotion to the Premier League for the coming 2017/18 campaign will see the club limited to just 25 senior players for the domestic season.

New rules were introduced to the top flight back in 2010 and manager Chris Hughton’s summer strengthening plans will have to factor in a number of different things as we adjust to our new division.

The 25 man squad that Hughton selects must be named within a few days of the transfer window closing this summer and that squad cannot be amended until the January transfer window opens.

Players who do not make the 25 man squad are eligible to feature for Brighton in both the FA and League Cup competitions, but they cannot be called upon for Premier League fixtures itself – unless they then come into that 25 man squad in January.

There are exceptions however, a goalkeeping emergency classes as an ‘exceptional circumstance’ so changes can be made outside of transfer windows in that department and we can also include an unlimited number of Under 21 players as one of the reasons behind the squad limit was to attempt to provide greater league opportunities for young talent.

A further driver behind the 25 man squad was to enable greater match time for homegrown talent as well, so no more than 17 members of the 25 man Premier League squad can be classed as foreign – at least eight have to classify as homegrown which means they have been registered with any FA or Welsh FA club for a period of three seasons (continuous or not) or 36 months prior to their 21st birthday – or at the end of the season during which they turn 21.

This rule is applied wholescale so nationality does not actually come into it, ie a player does not have to be English or Welsh and it obviously doesn’t mean that homegrown only applies to Brighton’s academy for these purposes.

Players in the 25 man squad that go out on loan to Football League clubs cannot be replaced, they simply retake their position in the 25 man squad when their loan expires.
