Brighton’s U21 players have been informed who stays at the Amex Stadium next season and who goes. One of our senior players to come through is Lewis Dunk; he’s being linked with Derby and Fulham.

The Official Website has confirmed we’ve informed Harry Doherty, Tom Dallison, Rob Hunt, Jesse Starkey, Jeffrey Monakana and Jason Davis that they’ll all be retained.

Academy manager John Morling said that they’ve been rewarded with these 12-month extensions for the progress made this season.

‘The group that has been retained have shown us enough progression over the past twelve months to warrant a new deal and all six have earned their extensions.

‘We feel there is more to come from these players and now it is down to them to make the most of the opportunity and continue their development.’

Given the fact that Monakana spent most of this season away from Brighton, and hasn’t seemed to have a first-team future, his retention is maybe a little surprising?

We couldn’t retain all of the Development Squad players though with Shamir Fenelon, who some might have expected to stay, among six players released, along with Bradley Barry, George Cole, Cameron Wiltshire, Danny Pappoe and Jimmy Muitt.

‘As with every season there comes a point when we have to make tough decisions and this season was no different.

‘There are some talented players that haven’t been kept on and we had some tough calls to make, but I would like to thank all the players that are departing for their efforts during their time with the club.

‘Everyone here at Brighton & Hove Albion wishes them the best of luck in the next stage of their careers.’

Wherever these players end up I’ll wish them well, as I’m sure everyone else will too.

Dunk previously came through that set up and is now a key member of the first-team, these six that we’ve retained will be looking to follow in his footsteps but, unsurprisingly, he’s being linked with a Brighton exit once again this summer.

A Premier League step up would be expected but if the Derby Telegraph is right then Derby are looking to tempt him to the iPro Stadium as they’re looking to bring him in to tighten their defence, and also add another attacking threat from set pieces, but they’ll face competition from Fulham.

Chris Hughton, and he shouldn’t, wouldn’t let him go without a fight though would he!
