I’m getting tired of hearing the ‘we should have done better’ thoughts that are coming out from plenty of Brighton players following a disappointing season really, but these thoughts are accurate.

Inigo Calderon’s latest, shared with the Argus, see him talking about his surprise at our decline this season but how we can learn from this and come back better for it, both on and off the pitch next time round.

At least that’s his aims!

‘You don’t see yourself in this position. You put a picture in your mind and it’s always quite a good picture.

‘We started really badly. The first month we were struggling a lot. Then we improved a bit and maybe we thought it was already done. I try always to be positive and we are going to learn a lot.

‘I’ve learnt a lot this year on and off the pitch. That’s the way you have to do it.’

I wouldn’t say that I expected it to be quite as hard as it’s been but I did think we would find the going tough, I had better hopes under Sami Hyypia than we saw though but feel, with the right movement in the transfer market and the retention of the right players, Chris Hughton can use his proven ability at this level to turn things around.

Personally, and Calderon knows that he’ll be getting the new contract offer that he wanted, he feels that we’ll all come back stronger and wiser for this seasons experience, which was perhaps a wakeup call after we had enjoyed ‘the good life’ for a while and perhaps become complacent? Well some had perhaps….

‘I think you learn more when you are having difficult times.

‘We’ve been enjoying the good life for three years. We were beautiful to watch. Now we are not this year. It’s going to be good because for sure next year we are going to be stronger.’

I’m just thankful that we don’t go into the final game of the season this time round with something riding on it as I’m not so sure that the final outcome would have been as jubilant as it was a year or so ago!

We put this season behind us though, learn the lessons from it and come back stronger for it as Calderon said, well hopefully anyway….
