Not only were Chris Hughton and Kazenga LuaLua both up for monthly awards for August they’ve only gone and done the double with Brighton ending a truly exceptional opening month to the season on another high!

Beating Ipswich last Saturday saw Albion end the month at the top of the Championship! It was also this result that clinched Hughton the Manager of the Month award for August.

With 15-points on offer Brighton took 13 of them, only dropping points in a draw at Huddersfield, a game Albion had taken the lead in within 20-seconds! Hughton was quick to share the praise around though, when speaking about this award in the official press release from Sky Bet he said.

‘I think it speaks volumes for what the players have achieved after a good pre-season and we were fortunate that we didn’t have any injuries in August.

‘The players have been excellent and worked very hard in pre-season. We’ve changed a few things from last year where we’ve looked to play two upfront which we felt would give us more opportunities to score goals and get the ball in that final third.

‘Anybody in my position would recognise that although it’s me picking up the award, it’s because of the work that so many have done here. We’ve got excellent coaches and an excellent sport science and medical department.’

The judging panel all agreed that Hughton quite rightly deserved this with him praised very highly by the likes of George Burley and Don Goodman.

Such has been the start to the season the Brighton odd on promotion has been slashed from 28/1 to 9/1!

Completing the double award for Albion was LuaLua, who was named the Player of the Month for his performances and goals in August.

LuaLua has hit the ground running this season, he doesn’t want to be that ‘impact player’ anyone so often viewed as being what he is. Hughton, who would have worked with him at Newcastle, knows what he can do and has faith in him.

This has seen the best from him, and long may this continue!

Two of this three-goals in August were also winners against Nottingham Forest and Blackburn with Hughton, on his award win, the boss added.

‘Kaz thoroughly deserves the award, he’s had a wonderful start.

‘There were really good signs of it during pre-season and he came back in good shape.

‘We were able to do a lot of work with him and he’s grown in confidence, but the area where he has excelled in his game is where he has got on the ball and provided an end product.

‘He has been exceptional in our first few games and he has a responsibility to keep that going and work on the aspects of his game that can help him improve, but the team have also played a great part in that and delivered for him.’

Goals haven’t been LuaLua’s forte really have they? He’s scored the odd one but not too many! If he can keep doing this, more importantly producing the football his ability has always suggested he could, we’ll get a great season from him.

The winger admitted he’s worked very hard over the summer with this paying off, winning this award pays testament to this and he’ll gain greater confidence from it.

Being nominated was ‘very special’ for him as it was to win it was a ‘very special moment’ for him, with him adding.

‘It was very special just to be nominated for the award and to win is a very special moment for me, but the most important thing is that the team has started the season very well.

‘I did work a lot in the summer to make sure I came into pre-season in good shape which has paid off so far, but I just want to keep going.

‘It’s about making sure you start the season well and it helps when you are in the starting eleven for each game because your confidence gets better every time you play.’

If we can see more of these monthly awards it’ll mean Albion have had a great season, after the international break we’ll be looking to make sure that didn’t damage the momentum and these awards haven’t acted as ‘a jinx’ as they sometimes can!
