A cynic may say Brighton ‘doth protest too much, methinks’ as far as it goes with Lewis Dunk and our views that he’s not for sale in light reports that continue to link Fulham with him.

Chris Hughton has spoken glowingly about the 23-year-old, in quotes carried by the Argus, today saying that he felt from January onwards he was the best player under him last season.

First and foremost, which should be the main area given he’s a defender, his defensive abilities were praised but his seven-goals was a great return with his continued development making him ‘absolutely an important part of what we are trying to do’ at the Amex Stadium going forward.

Hughton feels Dunk should take heart from the speculation surrounding him, as it means he’s doing plenty right, but we’re looking to build a squad around people like him and not dismantle it so he’s not for sale.

‘The speculation I think is nice on him and the club, because it means he is a player that is doing well.

‘But he is very much a part of what we are trying to achieve here and we, at this particular moment, are certainly not thinking in any way about losing any players.

‘What we are concentrating on is making sure the team and squad is strong enough for us to be at least challenging at the right end of the table.’

If, as we’ve said we do, we want to get back to the kind of level we had shown for a few years, making the play-offs, then we’ve definitely got to keep players like Dunk so it’s pleasing to hear that we’re talking about doing this.

The fact that we’re not adding a ‘however’ if x-amount if offered we’ll find it hard to refuse is even more encouraging, with the players we’re bringing in surely something Dunk and others are encouraged by themselves too!
