Brighton’s first signing of the summer has been confirmed with Joe Ward brought in from Chelmsford, for an undisclosed fee, following a successful trial.

Chris Hughton isn’t initially expected to feature him in the first-team squad as the 19-year-old will link up with the U21 side under Simon Rusk when pre-season training gets underway at the end of the month.

Ward’s form for Chelmsford earned him this trial and in his two-matches for the Development Squad he impressed significantly to earn this contract, signed after successfully agreeing terms and passing a medical.

Chances are Ward will be given a chance in pre-season but it’ll be down to the winger to prove himself worthy of a first-team place, which he could get if he does produce the goods!
