Manager Chris Hughton has confirmed that an investigation has been opened into claims that Connor Goldson was racially abused in the weekend’s game by a Derby County fan.

The alleged incident was said to have taken place during the two all draw at the iPro Stadium where Goldson was watching on as a spectator and Derby County have now referred the matter on to please, and in quotes carried by Sky Sports, Hughton said he was happy to leave the investigation to the authorities and that it probably wouldn’t be prudent for him to say too much at this stage.

‘It’s a situation that’s being dealt with by both clubs and the appropriate people, and I’m quite sure when there’s more to say it will be said. It’s being dealt with in the correct way. It’s probably best not to make too much comment, but it was dealt with very swiftly by all parties and we’ll find out the outcome in the very short future.’

Derby themselves, upon being made aware, released a statement on Sunday which read.

‘Derby County are concerned to hear about allegations of racial abuse by a supporter directed at a Brighton & Hove Albion player during Saturday’s game at the iPro Stadium. We take these matters seriously and will be referring the allegations to the Police. Abuse of any kind has no place in the culture of Derby County Football Club.’
