Manager Chris Hughton has said he’s been delighted with the three signings we have made so far this summer, but he knows we need to bring in more through the door.

With five loanees departing at the end of 2014-15, and three players out of contract that weren’t offered fresh terms, Hughton told the Official Site that he was pleased with the captures of Liam Rosenior, Tomer Hemed and most recently Gaetan Bong, but we did need more quality before the season begins.

‘We still need to bring players in, we’re very conscious that we lost five loan players at the end of last season and three players out of contract that we didn`t renew. We have to replace them and it soon hits you when you see the fixture list. If we were to win the Southend cup game, it would give us seven games in 23 days.’

Given that possibility Hughton went on to say that obviously it’s times like that where you really need a squad and depth, because players need to be kept fresh, you have to account for resting people if they are carrying knocks and so on.

‘It hits home how tough this league is. We knew we needed to recruit and the recruitment department have been working very hard, so we’re very confident that we`ll have other players in the forthcoming weeks. Ideally we want to do that as early as possible, although it does not always happen that way.’

The gaffer acknowledged that in the more recent years the bulk of business gets done as deadline day approaches, but he’s hoping that won’t be the case for us this year although he can’t rule out we may have to wait until then for one or two targets, but the hope is certainly to have the vast majority of our dealing done well in advance of that.

He also confirmed that we were hoping to bring in another goalkeeper because then it gave us the opportunity to loan out young stopper Christian Walton to get him some real game time and continue his own development given the future people at the club think he will have.

‘It’s one that we’re still going over, but we will be bringing a goalkeeper in, predominantly to allow Christian to go out on loan. We feel he has got a very bright future and what he has had is experience of being on the bench and playing three games in the past season. It’s been a great experience for him, but 95 per cent of the time was the experience of being on the bench, which is different to playing or playing elsewhere. He needs that for his development and for our development. It benefits the club and him to go out on loan this season.’

On the subject of goalkeepers, we do of course have a new goalkeeping coach in the shape of the returning Ben Roberts who came in the other week from Charlton Athletic, and Hughton had words of praise for him saying he was delighted to be able to work with him now as he’s heard nothing but good from other people.
