Manager Chris Hughton has said fans will need to be patient when it comes to transfer deals this summer, and he also said youngster Christian Walton will hopefully be off on a season long loan deal to bring the goalkeeper on more in his development.

Beginning with generic transfer strengthening given all the speculation, Hughton said he was more focused on getting the right people in, as opposed to getting them in quickly.

The Argus have him quoted as saying he’s happy enough to bide his time this summer.

‘I think we are happy with where we are. As you will find with most recruitment that goes through, generally not too much happens early in the summer. We know targets but, as always, knowing targets and getting them are two different things. What we know is that we don`t need to bring in the levels we brought in last year, when we brought in nine players plus two in January.’

With Brighton two down in attack given Bobby Zamora and James Wilson, he went on to say.

‘Hemed and Baldock did very well for us last season but we are two players light so I don`t think it is any surprise we are looking to strengthen up front. Elvis Manu came in and can play up front or in a wide area but it was a very difficult season for him. We want people we feel can improve us and give us good options up front. In Bobby and James, we had two very different types of player. What you want from your front players is to have different types and a bit of scope. We need to make sure we recruit well in that area.’

As for Walton, with the keeper having two frustration loan spells last season, Hughton wants to get him out for the season so he can hopefully get a real run of form and game under his belt.

Walton is likely third choice again with Niki Maenpaa’s contract extension, so getting the England Under 21 international out for game time makes perfect sense for the 20 year old and us.

‘Our plan very much is for Christian to go out on loan and get some regular games. He is at an age now where there is no doubt he is competing but we still feel he will benefit from going out on a season long loan. Christian had a couple of loan periods which, irrespective of how they went, is still valuable experience for him. I think he will be better for that but this is a good opportunity for him to go out on loan and it is certainly the right decision.’

Under the new rules, goalkeepers can be recalled from loan spells with 24hrs notice, and they can continue to play Under 21 football for their parent club as well.
