Although with an international tournament with England at U21 level to come this summer he’s told the BBC that he’s looking for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad that heads to the Czech Republic and will be using that as something to ‘focus his mind on’ to make up for the disappointment, overall, of the 2014/15 season for him personally and Brighton as a club.

It’ll be another honour for him to be involved, which if he is he hopes it’ll stand him in good stead for next season.

‘It’s another summer where I won’t really get a break but playing for your country is the biggest honour you can have.

‘Going into a tournament like that and coming up against the best players around the world in that age group will be a real test for me.

‘Hopefully it can improve me as a player for next year.’

Having started the season as a regular under former manager Sami Hyypia he then struggled when Chris Hughton came in and has made less than a dozen appearances so far in 2015, which has frustrated him and something he’s found difficult.

This lack of football is something that could threaten his place in the European Championship squad but having won 13 caps so far and started five of the last six-matches for the U21 side it’ll be a surprise if he wasn’t in.

Confidence isn’t something that the 21-year-old lacks though, he just wants a platform from which to show what he can do and wants to be able to do this regularly next season.

‘One minute I’m on a bit of a low and the next I’m on a high. It is frustrating when I don’t play and the season has been a bit of a disappointment. It’s been difficult for me.

‘Maybe early on in the season I played a lot of games, I was going away [with England] and when people were resting I was playing.

‘I have no excuses. I have standards and I want to keep those standards and perform every single week.

‘I know what I can do and I just need to show it.’
