New goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa has said he’s relishing the opportunity to do battle with new team mates David Stockdale and Casper Ankergren in the 2015-16 season.

The shot stopper has insisted he’s come into the club looking to be our number one but he knows he has to prove himself and impress first before that can happen, but having now met new goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts he told the Official Site that he now couldn’t wait to get going properly in pre season training.

‘It`s a challenge, but that`s what I`ve come here for and it will be great to work with these players. I had a good conversation with Ben and it is very exciting to be working with a new goalkeeping coach. I haven`t been to the stadium yet, but we drove past and I`ve seen some great pictures. The facilities here at the training ground will be a joy to use and it will be great to get some minutes at the Amex.’

Maenpaa went on to talk about how competitive he believes the Championship will be next season and he of course knows for the last few years we were challenging up at the top for promotion, until we had what we hope was a one season hiccup battling against relegation, and he’s looking forward to playing his part in lifting us back up near the top.

Joining up for training next week for the first time is however his next priority.

‘There are so many changes to the teams at the top of the league, whereas in Holland there are always the same clubs at both ends of the table. In this league you could say that almost anyone can get promoted, so it`s a really open and it`s very important that we start the season well. I am now looking forward to meeting all the new players in the team, as I have not come across any of them before and I cannot wait to meet the whole squad.’

For the 30 year old, securing a move to England is the culmination of a career long ambition for him as he’s always wanted to test himself in our leagues, and he’ll get that chance in the Championship or the domestic cups at least in his first year in the country.
