Finnish international goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa yesterday signed a new one year extension to his deal at Brighton.

The 31 year old joined the club last summer from VVV-Venlo and whilst providing back up to David Stockdale, he did take in three appearances last season, in cup ties against Southend United, Walsall and Hull City.

With his deal set to expire this month, he has now penned terms until June 2017.

Speaking to the Official Site after seeing the goalkeeper pen his extension, manager Chris Hughton said.

‘Niki has shown in the cup matches and in training that he’s an excellent goalkeeper. Alongside our other goalkeepers, we are really well covered in that area, and Niki really pushed and challenged David Stockdale throughout last season. I expect him to do the same again this season. Under goalkeeper coach Ben Roberts they’re an excellent group and work really well as a unit to help and support each other.’

Maenpaa had been away on international duty with his country for their friendlies against Belgium and Italy.
