Summer signing Mathew Ryan has backed record signing Jose Izquierdo to shine at Brighton following the announcement of his work permit and impending switch to the club.
Ryan knows the Colombian international well as this will be the second time he has played alongside him having first crossed paths at Clubbe Brugge back in the 2014/15 campaign. Last season they found themselves in opposite line ups and he described him as a big ‘character’ and he expects him to be a ‘big success’.
Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the completion of his move from Brugge, our goalkeeper explained.
‘He’s a very exciting player, very quick and explosive. All in all he’s a character, and will bring even more personality to the team with his style of play. He can do really well for us with the pace he has and cause havoc for opposition defences. What sets him apart is his directness for goal, whether he’s picking the ball up on the wing or elsewhere, he’s got his eye on goal. At the same time, he has the awareness to pass and if there’s someone in a better position, he’s a great team player and can play in others. He will be a great asset to the team and I’m looking forward to him coming in.’
Izquierdo was in France yesterday to collect his visa following the approval of his UK work permit and he’s expected in at the training ground later today and then he’s set for training at the weekend, so fans might get a first sight of him in the Cup tie against Barnet next Tuesday evening.
Ryan believes it will be worth the wait.
‘A lot of clubs are investing in their attackers to try and find players that can make the difference in tough moments. Jose has scored some important goals at important times for Club Brugge and he has the ability to make something out of nothing. He’s going to help our chances of having a successful year.’
He added.
‘We called him the crazy Colombian! He’s loves his music and is always smiling and laughing. He’s the type of bloke who is good to have around. You are always guaranteed a smile when you’re in his presence. Hopefully he brings a lot of smiles to everyone at Brighton, and I am looking forward to being reunited with him here.’
