Brighton’s Solly March enjoyed a profitable break with the England U21 side as he marked his return to international football with a goal in the win over Denmark on Monday.
March admitted he wasn’t expecting a recall into the squad this soon but was obviously delight it came and hopes he’s been able to ‘stake a claim’ with the goal and his performance – the Albion winger got the ball rolling in the 4-0 victory.
He told the Official Website it was easier to slip back into the fold as most of March’s England teammates prior to his injury are still involved.
‘I didn`t think I`d get a call-up to be honest, so I`m happy to get my chance to play. We have no more friendlies, so I`m happy to stake a claim with that goal and performance, and hopefully I can get there [to the finals]. It`s exciting; most of the same lads are still here and I`ve fitted straight back in. It`s been a good camp to be involved in, I`ve had a good week and I`m excited ahead of the summer.’
The 22 year old knows he’s got plenty of competition if he wants to secure a place in the squad for the European Championships in Poland this summer.
However, that is his aim with this the ‘icing on the cake’ for March if it can follow Brighton’s promotion into the Premier League.
‘We`re second at the moment and hopefully it`s our year. It would be the icing on the cake if we can win promotion and I go to the Euros – that`s the aim.’
