Chelsea have been linked with a surprise move for Brighton’s David Stockdale according to the Mirror.
Rumour has it Chelsea are drawing up alternatives to act as Thibaut Courtois’ back up – with Asmir Begovic set to leave for Bournemouth – and should a bid for Celtic’s Craig Gordon not go ahead a move for Stockdale will be made.
Antonio Conte would prefer to sign Scotland international Gordon but Celtic have so far turned down Chelsea’s advances with the form of Stockdale this season catching the eye of the Blues with a move for the former Fulham keeper.
Stockdale only has six months left on his Brighton contract – with it claimed the 31 year old is looking for a ‘lucrative contract’ – so we could lose him on a free transfer in the summer. A fee now as opposed to nothing in June for the keeper would be preferable.
However, as much as a move to Chelsea could be tempting for Stockdale he’ll know he’ll be limited to acting as back up to Courtois with him very much a benchwarmer. As good as he is involvement in cup-ties next season would be the best he could hope for
Assuming there is a genuine interest I can’t see him willing to sit out the upcoming years of his career on the bench – even at Chelsea – could you?
