So the Albion draw Woking at home in the cup, great news, a good chance of reaching the next round or a distraction from the league?
There is a strong case for both, that cannot be denied. Top of league One, the cup could be considered a distraction and it would be realistic to think that despite our league form that a Big away day in the cup is the best we can hope for. But what if that away day were never to come? We could draw a tough side in our league away from home, draw, and end up with a third round replay, mid January with injuries and suspensions mounting. Such a scenario would impact on our league form after all it happened to Leeds United last season whilst they were running away from the rest of pack, they slipped up and Norwich beat them to the title.
Poyet will need to be shrewd in who plays in the cup. Lower league teams will be robust, strong and not afraid to put their foot in. Key players cannot and will not be risked, not until the later rounds, if we get there. The magic of the cup in me is certainly not dead I love the prospect of a big away day, but promotion to the Championship will bring many more than just the one day out.
