Reports, towards the end of last week, said that West Ham, Everton and West Brom are all interested in taking Lewis Dunk to a level more fitting for a player of his ability, but a level that we’ll be hoping isn’t the case for at least another 12-months.

Dunks previously made no secret of the fact that, as much as some might laugh at the suggestion, he still harbours ambitions of playing for England at international level having played previously for the U21s. Of course he’ll not manage this if Brighton are in the Championship, and definitely not if we’re in the lower reaches of it…. With England short of quality central defenders if Dunk steps up why completely dismiss such thoughts!

A defender shouldn’t ever be your top goalscorer should he? But the fact that he is highlights the problems that we’ve had this season! That being said the 23-year-old is a constant threat from set pieces and that has led to his seven-goals so far.

It’s his defensive abilities that are catching the eye and the Mirror has reported that these Premier League clubs are set for a ‘three-way scrap’ to try and prise him away from the Amex Stadium for £5m in the summer?

With a contract until 2018 and without the financial pressure to sell if we’re serious about challenging for the top six again next season we need to keep players like Dunk so I’m hoping that he’s willing to stay for one last season at least to see if the improvement, after this disappointing season, we’re aiming for can come.

It’ll be interesting to see what the summer does bring though!
