It, as we know following confirmation of this ‘training spell’ with Brighton recently, has been described merely as Sam Adekugbe simply training with Albion during the MLS off-season.

As we know Adekugbe has previously trained with Rangers and Liverpool and he’s now training with Brighton, which has been put down as just that, training nothing more but the Vancouver Whitecaps left back has admitted to the Argus he does have ‘what if’ thoughts!

He was questioned as to who he felt he was trying to impress whilst he trains with Albion? Which was a move set up by the club hierarchy with his Whitecaps boss Carl Robinson actively encouraging the London born Canadian international to undergo this spell.

His answer, as he admitted he wouldn’t be ‘human’ if he didn’t think it was perhaps a trial, was.

‘I don’t think I would be human if I wasn’t thinking that.

‘I’m enjoying it. The first-team guys have been great and there are a lot of players that I like. I’m here to gain experience. Last year I went to Scotland and Liverpool, so it was good to see what the football is like over there and come into a different level.

‘My coach Carl Robinson really wanted me to train elsewhere and see the different levels. I am English, I was born in London, so it was a good opportunity to see what I’ve missed while I`ve been in Canada.’

With two-years left on his contract with his MLS club, and there seemingly no indication from those within the Amex Stadium this could result in a January move, he’s hopeful if nothing else this spell back in England can see him return to Canada an improved player.

He added.

‘A lot of players’ wishes are to play in England because for me it’s the home of football.

‘It’s great to see what the standard is like and to bring that back to Vancouver to know what I need to do to improve.’

Like I’ve previously said you can never say never when it comes to something coming of this but my thoughts are more along the lines of the future potential to both clubs from letting him train with Brighton at this time.

If he blows Albion boss Chris Hughton away as he trains with the first-team and U21 squads, you never know what he might be asking Santa for at Christmas!
