Albion have nipped in ahead of the transfer window deadline to bring in former England international Matt Upson on loan.

The 33-year-old centre-back joins from Premier League Stoke, and will remain on the south coast for the remainder of the season – including any potential play-off fixtures.

His arrival will be an instant boost to Albion’s otherwise injury-hit backline – with captain Gordon Greer sidelined for three weeks – and he will go straight into the squad to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Poyet told seagulls.co.uk, “We wanted a player in that position. We had the chance to bring a player of his quality and went for it.

“He has presence, he’s a leader and it`s a good opportunity for us and for him to play football.”

Elsewhere, Romain Vincelot has had his contract terminated by mutual consent, with the Frenchman most recently loaned out to Gillingham. Development player Matt McGiveron has also been released.
