Sheffield Wednesday know a win on Friday and they’ll remain in the top six whatever the other result over the weekend. However, Birmingham head to Hillsborough aiming to build on a first win under Gianfranco Zola with another to close the nine points between them and the 6th placed Owls.
Having failed to win in the last two Brighton have lost top spot to Newcastle. Should Albion record a win over relegation threatened Burton – three points clear of the bottom three – at the Amex Stadium they will return to the top of the table. Well, until the Magpies play in the evening kick off at least.
Aston Villa are now closer to the relegation zone than the play-offs after a winless run of six games. If Ipswich can extend that run with a win at Villa Park they’ll move above Villa – who could end the weekend as low as 19th.
After a defeat last weekend – and an FA Cup loss in midweek – Derby go into the weekend three points off the play-offs, which could be extended if Sheffield Wednesday win on Friday. Bristol City have won only once in the last 10 played but the Robins head to the iPro Stadium looking to make it three unbeaten.
The play-off push Fulham are looking to make has been damaged by two defeats in the last three. Wigan – who are four points from Championship safety – are the next visitors to Craven Cottage.
Leeds are in a strong play-off position but will still have an eye on automatic promotion when Cardiff visit Elland Road. The Bluebirds are clear of relegation but have now lost three of the last four with a victory against one of Neil Warnock’s former clubs potentially moving them into midtable.
Recovering from a poor run of form Norwich are now unbeaten in four – having won three – to move just two points off the top six. Nottingham Forest’s improvement under Gary Brazil – appointed until the end of the season – will see them go to Carrow Road having won three of the last four.
A run of just two defeats in the last 10 keeps Preston in play-off contention – despite winning just three of these games – ahead of the visit of Brentford. The Bees go to Deepdale unbeaten in two and sit comfortably in midtable.
QPR’s recent three game winning run had been followed up by a run of four without a win. This leaves the R’s with some relegation concerns again ahead of the visit from promotion chasing Huddersfield. Depending on other results – and a fourth straight win – Town could move to within three points of an automatic promotion place.
Jaap Stam was named the Championship Manager of the Month ahead of Reading’s – unbeaten in four with three won – meeting with Barnsley. The Royals are just five points off the top two with the Tykes heading to the Madejski Stadium just four points off the play-offs themselves.
Rotherham are virtually doomed as eight defeats in the last 10 – with only four wins all season – sees them 15 points from safety ahead of the visit from Blackburn. Rovers head to the New York Stadium to face the bottom side having won their last game knowing another could take them out of the bottom three.
If Wolves’ run from the last four played in the Championship continued in the last kick off on Saturday they’ll record a win over Newcastle. However, the league leaders will have other ideas as they look to maintain the one point lead – if not build on it – they head into the weekend holding over title rivals Brighton.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
