Queens Park Rangers v Aston Villa 12:00
Friday will see Norwich kicking off the action at Carrow Road knowing a win would take them back into the top six, albeit on a temporary basis. However, Huddersfield will want to end the week with a third straight win that could see Town end the weekend as high as 3rd.
As Newcastle travel to relegation threatened Burton they would be expected to come away from the Pirelli Stadium with all three points – that’s not a given though. However, if the Magpies do achieve that they’ll keep top spot whatever title rivals Brighton do.
Blackburn will look for a reaction to successive defeats when they welcome Reading to Ewood Park. Rovers are looking to get back to winning ways to move out of the bottom three whereas the Royals have lost their last two on the road to lose ground on the top two.
A woeful run of five defeats in the last six is something Bristol City will want to end quickly as that’s relegation form! They’ll host a Preston side who have only suffered two defeats in their last 10 in the league and North End will want another three points to consolidate 11th place.
Cardiff’s much welcomed three points against Wolves in midweek saw them climb out of the bottom three. If the Bluebirds can make it successive Cardiff City Stadium wins against Barnsley it will definitely remain that way as we move ever closer to Christmas.
Fulham are the latest side looking to end the impressive Derby run. The Cottagers are three points off the play-off so have that added incentive to claim the points at Craven Cottage – the Rams are seeking an eighth straight win though.
Leeds are 6th but 3rd-10th is very tight so they know any slip and they could slide down the table and out of the play-off spot they currently occupy. Having won back-to-back games this week Brentford head to Elland Road after another to move them towards midtable security – potentially beyond in the weeks ahead.
Nottingham Forest’s three game winning run has ended this week – they’ve lost one and drawn one so they’ll want to end it on a high against struggling Wolves . Paul Lambert will take his side to the City Ground just two points off the bottom three.
One of the sides just outside of the top six – literally – are Sheffield Wednesday. A game at Hillsborough is one they would be expected to win against rock bottom Rotherham, 12 points from safety as things stand.
A game at the DW Stadium against Ipswich will give Wigan the chance to close the gap between them and safety. The struggling Tractor Boys are 17th but only five points above the drop zone themselves.
The late kick off on Saturday will be at St Andrew’s. Having surprisingly parted with Gary Rowett we’ll see Gianfranco Zola return to English football with Birmingham when they host Brighton. It’ll make no difference to Chris Hughton’s side but they’ll go into this knowing what leaders Newcastle have done – the Albion objective will be to claim all three points regardless.
A game that had become a regular in the Premier League in recent years will round off the action in the Championship when struggling QPR host Aston Villa on Sunday lunchtime. The R’s are facing a relegation battle whereas Villa are looking to get some momentum going again towards a play-off push after two defeats in three.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
