Monday 20th February 2017 – CHAMPIONSHIP
Newcastle United v Aston Villa 20:00
Brighton have the chance to return to the top of the Championship when hosting Barnsley. A win at the Amex and Albion will go two points clear of Newcastle – who play on Monday – but with the Tykes chasing a play-off place they have plenty to play for too.
Birmingham’s poor season has seen them lose four in the last five. The Blues host QPR – who haven’t won in five – with Ian Holloway’s side back in the relegation battle.
Having won just three of the last 10 Burton are just two points above the relegation zone ahead of Norwich’s visit. The Canaries are unbeaten in six but two draws in the last three mean they’ll go to the Pirelli Stadium four points off the play-offs.
Three wins in four have taken Cardiff clear of relegation trouble into midtable. Bottom of the league Rotherham are 14 points from safety heading to the Cardiff City Stadium.
Ipswich welcome promotion chasing Leeds to Portman Road looking to add to the three game unbeaten run. The Whites ended back-to-back defeats with a win in midweek to keep them in with a chance of finishing in the top two.
With Nottingham Forest seven points clear of relegation trouble at the moment Forest should be ok. But a third successive defeat – if that happens – against Sheffield Wednesday at the City Ground could change things. The Owls have won three in a row and are currently three points clear in a play-off spot.
A win in the last game took Wigan to within two points of getting out of the relegation zone. If the Latics beat Preston they could climb out of trouble with North End looking to close the seven points between them and a top six place at the DW Stadium.
Monday will see Newcastle have the chance to react to Brighton’s result. A win against an Aston Villa side on a poor run of form – they have lost six of the last seven – will take the Magpies back to the top table. Should the Seagulls drop points on Saturday it would extend it.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
