Cardiff’s hopes of finishing in the top-10 could be improved with a win over already promoted Newcastle at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday. The Magpies, on the other hand, could move to within a point of leaders Brighton keeping the title race going… until Albion’s game on Saturday anyway.
One win in 10 is form Barnsley will want to improve upon to end the season – the Tykes will be in the Championship next season though regardless. This same will be said of Burton, who are almost safe anyway following back-to-back victories, if they can record at least a point at Oakwell.
Anything but a Birmingham win in Harry Redknapp’s St Andrew’s debut against Huddersfield, third, and the Blues could find themselves in the bottom-three come 5pm on Saturday evening. Town will look for the first of the (probable) four points needed to secure a third-placed finish heading into the play-offs – a place confirmed by a win at Wolves on Tuesday.
Blackburn could move out of the bottom-three leaving the survival bid in their own hand if a win can be secured in the visit of Aston Villa to Ewood Park – Villa fans could have mixed feelings, knowing last Sunday’s Second City derby win over Birmingham pushed the Blues closer to relegation, which could become more likely with a Rovers win?
Rivals Derby and Wolves meet at the iPro Stadium in a game that basically has nothing more than pride at stake as the Rams can no longer make the top-six and visiting Wolves are safe from the threat of relegation.
A fifth successive Fulham win would effectively seal a top-six finish ahead of Leeds, owing to the superior goal difference. However, after just one defeat in the last seven Brentford, ninth, have their eyes on an eighth-place finish, chances would be improved with a win at Craven Cottage.
Ipswich look to respond to a disappointing defeat against already relegated Rotherham when Sheffield Wednesday, fifth, head to Portman Road. An Owls win an they’ll confirm a play-off spot, anything less and a Leeds win and it’ll go down to the final day – potentially a three-way battle for two spots between Wednesday, the Whites and Fulham?
Leeds, after successive defeats and a failure to win in three, know nothing but a win against Norwich will be good enough or the play-off hopes are basically over – albeit they might not mathematically. The Canaries, eighth, go to Elland Road looking for a third straight win.
A run of four straight defeats has put Preston’s top-10 hopes in doubt. North End, 11th, saw their play-off hopes ended a few weeks ago but will look to break this run against bottom-side Rotherham – a rare win against Ipswich last time round means the Millers are chasing back-to-back victories.
Six defeats on the spin means QPR are back in the relegation battle but a win over Nottingham Forest – probably a point – and the R’s will be safe. Two wins in four has boosted Forest’s own survival hopes, defeat at Loftus Road and the bid to avoid the drop will go down to the final day – a point could be enough to avoid this?
Reading should be good for a top-six finish but a point is still needed to confirm the Royals’ play-off place, which could come against struggling Wigan? The second-bottom Latics are just about clinging on but will have relegation confirmed if they can’t win and Birmingham, 21st, and/or Blackburn, 20th, pick up any points.
Brighton and Newcastle are both going up to the Premier League but the battle to be crowned champions could go down to the wire if the Magpies win on Friday and Albion fail to in this evening kick off with Bristol City. Successive victories for the Robins means they are all but safe from the threat of relegation – other results might have confirmed this? If not a point would.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
