Wednesday 5th April 2017 – CHAMPIONSHIP

If Aston Villa hadn’t gone on a losing run a couple of months back the present form would have seen Villa pushing for the play-offs. As it is they are now looking for a top 10 finish, which is something QPR will also be eyeing up having lost just once in the last five heading to Villa Park, to take into next season.
Barnsley are seven without a win but did secure an added time point against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. The Tykes will seek that illusive win against Cardiff at Oakwell – the Bluebirds will hope for a reaction to a weekend defeat.
A third successive Brentford win will enhance the Bees’ chances of securing a respectable top 10 finish. Leeds will be looking for a reaction – to keep a tight grip on a top six position – to a first defeat in eight when they go to Griffin Park.
Brighton would return to the top of the Championship – Newcastle aren’t playing until Wednesday – with a victory over Birmingham. Albion are well set for automatic promotion whereas the Blues head to the Amex Stadium six points above the bottom three, five without a win.
It would take some effort for Derby to get into the play-off race but a victory over Fulham, who hold the fourth and final spot, at the iPro Stadium could revive the Rams’ hopes. An away win and the Cottagers retain sixth place regardless.
Despite losing just once in 10 Ipswich – having drawn eight – are very much in a relegation battle. Second bottom Wigan’s bid to avoid the drop looks likely to fail as the Latics are seven points from safety.
Three draws in four has kept Preston in with a chance of making the play-offs but a win is needed at Deepdale to realistically keep the pressure on. After a first Bristol City loss in four the Robins will look for a reaction against North End to ensure they remain outside of the bottom three.
Rotherham’s relegation was confirmed at the weekend so the Millers are now playing for pride. Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday would expect a win at the New York Stadium to boost their play-off hopes – if that happens it could take the Owls back into sixth.
Four successive Wolves wins has pretty much secured another season of Championship football but Wanderers WILL want better next term. The same applies to Nottingham Forest; however, they’ve still got work to do in order to fight off relegation. Mark Warburton’s secured successive draws and will hope it’s third time lucky as Forest look to increase the two points between them and Blackburn.
Reading will have one eye on the top two after a win over promotion rivals Leeds but more realistically the Royals are aiming to consolidate the top six bid. Blackburn go to the Madejski looking for a reaction to the weekend defeat, which could take Rovers out of the bottom three.
Automatic promotion has probably gone for Huddersfield now as Town look to avoid a third successive defeat when Norwich visit the John Smith’s Stadium on Wednesday. The Canaries are seven points off the top six so will probably miss out on the play-offs themselves.
Brighton might have returned to the summit by the time Newcastle face Burton on Wednesday? Whatever happens in that game the Magpies’ aim will be the same at St James’ Park – to win. The Brewers still have plenty to play for though and could use a huge scalp as a fillip to Championship survival.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
