Brighton’s Capital One Cup run goes on after a late winner at Roots Hall against Southend on Tuesday.

Albion looked set for an extra 30-minutes, perhaps even penalties, against Phil Brown’s Shrimpers side until a dramatic winner deep into injury time from LuaLua meant the Seagulls took up a place in round two of the League Cup.

Progression would be taken by Chris Hughton for sure however he’ll be happier this didn’t come with extra time needed following this one-nil win.

The Seagulls could have been ahead in the first half but a Holla, and he’s something of a dead ball specialist, saw his freekick turned away by the highly rated Southend ‘keeper Bentley.

Wordsworth, who has experience at Championship level so is one of the many in the Southend side that would cause many problems, which he did Albion but he was denied by debutant ‘keeper Maenpaa who saved well to keep out his volley.

Extra time was seemingly on the cards until LuaLua (90+3), the scorer of Brighton’s winner in the Championship opener with Nottingham Forest last Friday, was the match winner again as he finished, as he had at the Amex Stadium, low into the corner to seal a second round place.
