The Championship season continued with a few games played during midweek.

A dramatic finale at Brighton saw the leaders beaten by title rivals Newcastle – they went to the summit as a result. Victory for Blackburn at the other end boosted survival hopes.

Here’s a round up of the Championship action from the other games.

Results

Tuesday 28th February 2017 – CHAMPIONSHIP
Aston Villa 2-0 Bristol City 19:45
Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Derby County 19:45
Brighton & Hove Albion 1-2 Newcastle United 19:45
Wolverhampton Wanderers P-P Huddersfield Town

Aston Villa’s relegation concerns were eased with a 2-0 victory over Bristol City increasing the Robins’ fears of dropping back into League 1. Second half goals secured Villa back-to-back wins to move nine points clear of trouble. Only goal difference keeps Blackburn behind Bristol City after this third defeat in four.

Tony Mowbray’s first home game in charge of Blackburn ended with a 1-0 win over Derby. Victory means goal difference alone is all that stands between Rovers and safety. The Rams’ sixth game without a win was a further blow to fading play-off hopes.

Brighton lost the Championship lead to Newcastle after Rafael Benitez’s side went away from the Amex Stadium with a dramatic 2-1 win. Albion had been on for all three points but a late equaliser and then last minute winner turned the game around. The Magpies are now two points clear at the top.
