Ahead of the weekend’s action against Blackburn Rovers, Brighton confirmed that young goalkeeper Christian Walton had headed to Southend United on a verified emergency loan spell.

The 21 year old headed out on Saturday morning and was eligible to make his debut for them in the weekend’s match against Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall. He duly debuted, keeping a clean sheet in a three nil victory.

In line with EFL rules, the loan deal came about as Southend had no professional goalkeepers fit to play, and having had that independently certified, he is initially eligible for Oldham and then the midweek clash against Bolton Wanderers. Southend can apply to have the deal extended for a further seven days but it remains to be seen if they take that option.

Having taken in a total of 32 appearances for former coach Nathan Jones’ Luton Town earlier in the season prior to being recalled, it’s his second spell out and no doubt he’ll enjoy the games.
