It’s time for the latest Team of the Season concoction, and this is based on statistics.
With a nod to WhoScored.com their best Championship XI from the last campaign gave a straight 442 choice but does not feature the players you’d actually expect.
With scoring counted from 4 August 2016 through to the 8 May 2017, the selection reached is based on the player in that position who scored the most points based on their calculations across the entire season.
The clear obvious talking point is how only Matt Ritchie features for Champions Newcastle United, whilst Brighton have two entries in the shape of Lewis Dunk and Anthony Knockaert, as do Reading with Ali Al Habsi and Yann Kermorgant and Barnsley with Andy Yiadom and Marc Roberts.
There’s also no place for the top five Championship goalscorers for the campaign.
No doubt some will agree, plenty will disagree but WhoScored’s rating system does included over 200 raw statistics based on a players influence in individual games.
Admittedly the caveat is this selection might change on a later update, but this many days after the end of the season I assume at least that they have taken place.
