Albion take a look at Shorey

Nicky Shorey has joined Albion for a week’s trial as the club look to fill the left-back void.

The ex-Reading defender, currently a free agent following his release at the Madejski, linked up with the Seagulls this morning to join the players on their return for pre-season training, report the Argus.

Despite manager Gus Poyet’s sacking last night, the club have pressed on with plans for player recruitment ahead of the new season, identifying the left-back position as an area in clear need of strengthening.

Indeed, if Shorey, 32, was to agree a move to the Amex, they’d effectively be trading left-backs with divisional rivals Reading – who recently snapped up Albion’s loan star of 2012/13, Wayne Bridge.

A seasoned campaigner with vast amounts of Championship and top flight experience, Shorey made 21 appearances for the Royals last season – including 16 Premier League starts – before being released upon relegation.

Whilst it would inevitably be something of a downgrade from the high-energy and ultra consistent displays we saw from Bridge last season, I think Shorey would prove to be a steady and reliable performer at this level.
