A brilliant strike from Sidwell, when he capitalised on a mistake from Smith to then lob Bristol City ‘keeper O’Donnell from 50-yards, had Brighton ahead early on.
The win was assured soon after Murphy continued his goalscoring form to extend the unbeaten run to 10-matches.
