Gritty & Determined – Jones

Assistant head coach Nathan Jones has described our performance against Middlesbrough as an honest, gritty and determined showing from the lads.

Thanks to a late goal from Matthew Upson, Brighton took all three points in the game, and Jones told the Official Site that sometimes you have to take a game one nil to ensure the points, and every now and then a tight win like that can do more to galvanise a squad because they really had to work for it, as opposed to taking a game by a three or four goal margin.

‘It galvanises you and you really have to grind the result out, and that is what we have done. It was a real honest win. The three points are big, especially in this league with the close proximity of all the teams, but to come away to Middlesbrough – who are in a false position – and get the win is massive.’

As for the overall game, Jones says that he felt we started very well and looking back on the game he doesn’t believe it would’ve been unfair had we taken a one or two goal lead inside the first 20 minutes, but then the game changed and they came back into it more and it turned into a real Championship level battle where it became about how much each team and their players really wanted it, and thankfully we came out on top.

‘We were not fluent in anything we did, we had to shore it up and I cannot say how big it is to come here and win and it keeps our momentum going.’

An unbeaten run of two, leaving us in eighth place will certainly rise a smile at this particular time of year, especially now if we can build on that as we head into the New Year and 2014 and maintain an unbeaten run as the table natural starts to split at this time of year. Keep in with the top group and we shouldn’t be too far away.

Jones also had special praise for Craig Conway who now returns to Cardiff City following his spell, who he says got better as time went on with us and he proved to be exactly the type of player they thought he would be in terms of talent and application.

Whether we make a subsequent move in January will have to be seen.
