Hughton On the Button With New Brighton Capture

|

One of the worst-kept secrets this summer came to pass yesterday evening as Brighton confirmed the speculation linking us with goalkeeper David Button as they announced his capture.

He joins us from Fulham for an undisclosed fee and the 29-year-old stopper has penned a three year deal at the Amex Stadium as he becomes our fifth capture of the summer so far.

Speaking to the Official Site as confirmation of his signing was announced, manager Chris Hughton explained.

“We’re delighted to bring a goalkeeper of David’s experience to the club. With Christian Walton and Robert Sanchez going out on loan this season, we felt we needed someone to provide further competition for places in that area of the team. He has a wealth of experience, having made over 300 appearances during his career so far, and I’m sure he will work well with Maty Ryan and Jason Steele.”

Button began his career at Tottenham Hotspur, taking in loan spells with a number of Football League sides as he developed further and grew his experience. The former England Under 21 international then made the switch to Charlton Athletic, before moving on to Brentford where he became a regular and really started showing what he was capable of.

He made over 140 appearances for Brentford in his three years with them before the Cottagers snapped him up in the summer of 2016. He made over 60 appearances for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, including 20 games in 2017/18 where Fulham won promotion back to the Premier League with a Play-Off success over Aston Villa at Wembley stadium.

With Maty Ryan already at the club and Jason Steele joining a few weeks back, he is our second goalkeeper addition and he’s coming in looking to provide real competition in an effort to win the shirt for himself.
