A Capital One Cup tie with League Two newcomers Newport County will mark the beginning of Albion’s 2013/14 home campaign.
The Welshmen were this morning drawn away at the Amex, meaning the Seagulls will kick off their cup campaign against the lowest ranked club in the competition – due to take place on 6th August, 7.45pm kick-off.
Under the guidance of ex-Spurs stalwart Justin Edinburgh, County won promotion back up to the Football League via the Conference play-offs last season, overcoming fellow Welsh side Wrexham to end a 25-year absence.
It was named the Littlewoods Challenge Cup the last time the aptly nicknamed ‘Exiles’ competed, in the 1987/88 season, and they’ll no doubt be looking to ruffle a few feathers on their long-awaited return.
Indeed, the Seagulls – still facing uncertainty over their leadership for the coming season – have a recent history of struggling against lower (and non) league sides in cup competitions.
