Brighton have wrapped up the permanent signing of Matt Upson, following his release by Stoke last month.

The former England international enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Amex during the second half of last season, however he couldn’t quite help the club to Premier League promotion.

His return has been met with much joy by head of football operations David Burke, who had this to say on the official website: ‘His experience is fantastic and it really shows our intent by bringing in someone of Matt’s pedigree.

‘It’s not like he’s a new signing, because he’s been with us for almost six months and he knows exactly what we are all about.

‘He brings continuity and stability to the defence, which is what we were looking for.

‘We finished with the best defensive record in the league and we will build on that for the coming season.’

The club certainly know what they’re getting with the 34-year-old who still has plenty to offer the game and I wouldn’t rule out the defender staying with the Seagulls longer than his initial one-year deal.
