The supporters deserve better

Brighton and Hove Albion face a crucial week in their battle against the drop. They must win away at Hereford tomorrow night and then against Swindon at the Withdean on Saturday to stand any chance of staying up following Saturdays dire 2-0 defeat to MK Dons at Stadium MK.

It is a big ask for a team that has failed to score in over 300 minutes of football and who’s performances have been woefully inept for the majority of the season.

On the evidence of this performance and with a few notable exceptions, the players have already given up the fight and/or do not appear to care, the only people to come out the match with any credit were the fantastic 2,000 + travelling supporters who made a lot of noise and who, frankly, deserve much much better.

Unsurprisingly, even they showed their frustration by booing the team at the final whistle.

A crowd of 15,842 saw the Dons score twice in the first half through Ali Gerba and Jason Puncheon and then comfortably play out the second half to secure the points.

Albion had their chances through strikers Lloyd Owusu and Craig Davies, who both missed badly but in the end they were ouplayed and outclassed by the Roberto DeMatteo’s promotion chasing side. The Seagulls are now a massive 8 points adrift of safety with just 7 games to go,although they do have two games in hand on the teams above them, which if won, would reduce the gap to 2 points.

Judging by the majority of the fans reaction on phone in’s/websites/message boards etc, there is already the acceptance that basement division football is now inevitable…a sad and somewhat worrying state of affairs for a club that was one league away from the premier league just 3 years ago and also plans to move into a new stadium in the not too distant future.

The players still have a chance to prove them wrong….lets hope that they can.
